Following the loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said, ״I’m not doing my job well this year.״ One curious decision in the final minutes was to trap Deni Avdija out of ball screens. Avdija is Portland’s best playmaker, but he wasn’t particularly efficient from the field (6-for-16), and Stephen Curry - not exactly known as a stopper - even contained in single coverage a few times. Meanwhile, Jerami Grant had a huge shooting night (35 pts, 7-13 from 3).But on 3 critical possessions in the 4th quarter, Kerr apparently decided to trap Avdija after the ball screen. First trap: the 6-9 Avdija (The taller you are, the less traps bother you) hits Donovan Clingan on the short roll, and Clingan immediately finds Sidy Cissoko under the rim. Cissoko kicks it out, and Grant drills an open three. Next possession: another trap, another pass to Clingan on the short roll - this time the center delivers a lob to Toumani Camara for the dunk. And finally, not exactly a trap, but Jimmy Butler is in a high-drop, and effectively two defenders are shading Avdija on the drive. With Grant’s defender, Draymond Green, tagging Clingan, Avdija stops and finds the open Grant again. That’s 8 direct points off Kerr’s coverage choice.
Watch - 3 possessions, 3 traps on Avdija, 8 points:
