Giannis Antetokounmpo took only 11 shots against the Oklahoma City Thunder, finishing with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, and suggested after the game that his teammates were to blame for the low volume.
However, the real "culprit" was the Thunder’s defense. Lu Dort shadowed him individually when Giannis was off the ball or acting as a screener in pick-and-roll situations (push and under). Whenever the Bucks tried to feed Giannis in the post, Cayson Wallace was there to trap, sometimes while the ball was still in mid-air on its way to the Greek Freak. In transition, the Thunder clogged the paint and forced Giannis to give up the ball. Ironically, it was only when Giannis tried to create in the half-court facing the basket that Dort backed off, essentially daring him to shoot if he really wanted to.
The fundamental issue for Milwaukee is that they lack a functional backcourt and has almost no perimeter gravity. Kevin Porter Jr. is sidelined, Gary Trent Jr. has practically fallen out of the rotation, and players like Ryan Rollins or AJ Green would struggle to crack the starting five on most playoff contenders.
Giannis is missing a true pick-and-roll partner in the mold of Jrue Holiday, Khris Middleton, or a young, healthy Damian Lillard. If the Bucks fail to find that caliber of player, his days in Milwaukee are probably numbered.
